tinyMCE
Ok guys, just a quick note this time about the tinyMCE editor. Basically, we have been looking through the stats for our site and have seen that a BIG portion of our bandwidth is being eaten up by the tinyMCE editor, too much really. Its one of the reasons why we had a downtime last month. Our bandwidth is disappearing for this month too, making another downtime a real possibility. So, in the interests of trying to keep CG going, we have turned off the tinyMCE editor for the time being. Its still built into CG though, so you will still have the option to turn it back on, but please don't! Really, we would like to ask that all our members to help us out and leave tinyMCE turned off until further notice. It will make things more awkward for you in the short term, but we hope that you will think its worth it to keep CG from crashing every month. Hopefully this will just be a temporary measure until we can figure out ways to streamline the site. We'll keep you posted.

CG Downtime

Greetings,

Well, we're back! Sorry for the downtime folks. It was unavoidable, sadly. CG got a bit of a traffic surge there, and went over our bandwidth allowance for May. It's a problem that we haven't had for a while now, and one that we had thought we were rid of for good, but alas, it doesn't appear to be so. Rest assured though that we will be keeping an eye on our traffic levels this month, so hopefully we won't have any further problems.

Anyways, sorry once again and, welcome back.

More info on Site Upgrade

Hey guys,

Well, its been a busy couple of days here, fixing bugs and what not. It's hard to imagine how so many little flaws crop up when you rebuild an archive like this. But ho hum, c'est la vie as they say.

Onto the point of this message. First off, a big thank you to all those people who expressed their thanks, we really appreciate that you like the fruits of our labours.

Now then, some of you have requested some slight modifications to the site. You may have noticed that we have gone back and edited our skin a little to bring it yet closer to the appearance of our old site. The grey background is, as was pointed out to us, a lot easier on the eyes when reading. Also, the smaller text does make the site seem more streamlined. However, for those who found the larger text easier on the eyes, we have added a new skin to the site, imaginatively titled CG_Red_Large, in which the larger text is preserved. So now you can have it as you like, big or small, its still the same old CG :)

As far as TOTALLY new skins go... we did promise them to you, and they are in the pipeline. They are rather cumbersome beasts to assemble and finalise though, so you will have to be patient with us. In the meantime, anyone who wishes to submit a skin for CG should feel free to do so. For the present, we are only accepting completed skins that can be applied with a minimum of tweaking on our part (should we like what we see of course :P). In the future, we may run a full on banner/skin contest, but for now we are focussing on ensuring the proper functioning of this new archive.

To ashleyfanfic, you will be delighted to know that we have added the Recently Updated box to the main page once again - rest assured that its absence was not because we didn't want it there, but rather because it wasn't working properly. But its back now, and working fine. Enjoy!

Some people have asked us about including images in summaries. Now, while there is nothing technically wrong with doing this, we would ask that people not do it. Images and banners within stories are fine, but adding them to summaries just makes browsing through the list of fics all the more messy and confused. So yeah, please, no images in summaries, thanks.

We have also added a new (and as yet experimental) feature to the site today, Avatars. Anyone who wants to may now add an avatar to their user profile. Images should be hosted off-site, on photobucket or a similar gallery site, and linked in. Note, images will be resized to fit within the bounds of the profile. 200 pixels is the max size in either direction. Needless to say, lewd or otherwise inappropriate images are strictly forbidden. Anyone caught using an inappropriate avatar will have their account deleted immediately.

Right, thats about enough from us. Thank you for your comments and your suggestions. Please feel free to keep them coming. CG is, after all, an archive run by shippers for shippers. If there is anything we can do to make your reading more enjoyable, then please let us know :)

Tata for now,

RoBoC, Raffy and all at CG

All New CG

Well guys and guyettes, it's here, the all shiny, all new version of the BEST fanfic archive on the net!

There are lots of new and exciting features to explore, including a few that some of you have been asking for for YEARS. Update alerts for favourite stories and authors, WYSIWYG text editors for posting reviews, top 10 lists and opinion polls are just some of the brand new features that we are pleased to bring to you today!

As for the look of the site... well, in order to minimise the workload during our downtime, we decided to keep things *similar* to how they were before. Currently, this CG_Red skin is your only option. Don't worry, for those who like variety, there will be new skins coming online over the next few weeks, so watch this space ;)

Upgrading our software has also allowed us to address some of the security issues that have plagued CG lately. Hopefully with the latest script software that galleons can buy will keep those annoying spammers at bay.

Right, so there's nothing much else to say right now, except, HAPPY READING!

RoBoC, Raffy and all the CG Team.

PS: Anyone who has ever tried to upgrade an archive to a whole new version will know that bugs and glitches are innevitable. We've done our best to fix the problems we could find, but doubtless there will be some we missed. So, if any of you come across something that's not doing what it should, please, feel free to email us at coloured.grey[at]gmail.com, and let us know. Thanks in advance.
